WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH THIS FEST?
RIOT LA has over 45 shows in just four days featuring the top stand up comedians and podcasts, panels, shows and more! But get this—it’s ALL on one block of downtown Los Angeles. It’s a huge, hilarious weekend long block party.
HOW DID THIS ALL GET STARTED?
In January, 2012 RIOT LA was officially born when we launched a promotional PSA on Kickstarter to help raise initial funds for the festival. The response was overwhelming and we raised over $10,000 in just 10 days — the idea of bringing downtown LA an alternative comedy festival was clearly something that this city and this community wanted. Our commitment to celebration and community is why we created RIOT. Los Angeles is home to some of the best comedy in the country, and we want to share that with as many people as we can. We don’t see RIOT as just another comedy festival. It’s a celebration of underground comedy and everything that makes the community surrounding it so unique.
Over the past five years, Executive Producer and Creator of RIOT Abbey Londer has immersed herself in this vibrant, underground comedy scene in LA. She’s had the good fortune to meet and work with some of the most talented comedians around, and has given her uncompromising energy and talent to this thriving community. Abbey got her roots in comedy in Chicago at places like The Second City, iO and the Annoyance theaters. One night at some bar she was with fellow producers Dave Ross and Jeff Wattenhofer of Holy Fuck, and Chris Register — and together they couldn’t help but wonder that with all of these amazing comedians and such a supportive and thirsty community—why doesn’t LA celebrate them? Voila! RIOT.
